Privacy

Engine ehf., reg. no. 621021-1680, runs Blöðin, the website blodin.is and the app for iOS/iPadOS and Android, and is the controller of the personal data processed there under the Icelandic Data Protection Act No. 90/2018 and the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679. We collect as little as we can: there's no sign-in, and no ads or tracking.

Cookies and browser storage

Blöðin uses one cookie, which remembers the language you choose, Icelandic or English, until a year after your last visit. In your browser we also keep settings such as light or dark appearance and whether you've seen the note about the app. They stay on your device and aren't used to identify you.

Analytics

To see which papers are read and how Blöðin is used, we count which issues are opened, which pages are read and for how long, which links in the pages are followed, and what is searched for. This sets no cookies, collects no personally identifiable information and doesn't follow you across sites: to count visitors, each day gets a new random key, deleted when the day is over. The data is hosted within the European Economic Area and only looked at in aggregate; each paper's publisher sees the numbers for their own paper.

Search

When you search the papers, your search terms are sent to Edition Engine, the system that holds the papers, to find results. Search terms aren't stored with anything about you, but they can appear in server logs.

Hosting and server logs

Blöðin is hosted by Cloudflare, which processes data on our behalf. As on most websites, each visit produces server logs with, for example, the IP address, time, address and browser. We use them only to keep Blöðin running and to find errors, and they are deleted automatically after a few days. This processing is based on our legitimate interest in running a secure, working service (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR, see Icelandic Act No. 90/2018).

The app

The app sends the same anonymous reading counts as the website, with no identifier for you or your device; counts for papers read offline wait on the device until they can be sent. If you turn on notifications, we keep the device's notification token, issued by Apple or Google, with the app's language and the papers you follow, so we can tell you when a new issue is out. The token isn't linked to a name, an email address or what you read, and it's deleted when you turn notifications off or delete the app. Notifications are delivered through Apple's and Google's services. Settings and thumbnails of papers you've opened are stored on the device itself and are gone if you delete the app.

Who gets the data

We don't sell personal data or share it with anyone. The only ones who process it are the providers that run Blöðin for us, such as Cloudflare, and they may not use it for anything else. Authorities get data only where the law requires us to hand it over.

Security

All traffic to Blöðin, on the web and in the app, is encrypted. Access to server logs and analytics is limited to those who need it to run Blöðin.

Publishers and other sites

If you leave Blöðin, for example for a publisher's website, the App Store or Google Play, their privacy policies apply.

Your rights

You have the right to know what personal data we process about you and get a copy of it, to have it corrected or erased, to receive it in a machine-readable format, to restrict its processing and to object to it. Contact us to use these rights. You can also complain to the Icelandic Data Protection Authority, personuvernd.is.
